Under the Terms of Use of this "WebSite", it is essential that you consider and follow the safety recommendations before working on your machine. Failing to follow safety instructions or recommendations as contained in this Terms of Use or as contained in the instructions or recommendations of the vendor or manufacturer can lead to data loss, serious damage to the PC, personal injury, or even death. Death is very rare and easily avoidable if you follow these safety precautions, but the potential does exist due to the high voltages present in some PC components.
5.1 General Warning
I would recommend that, as far as possible, do not open the PC box. Please ask a qualified PC technician to handle it. If your PC hardware or its components are in Warranty, then you should never service it or open it yourself. You have to refer it back to an authorized service center. Any unauthorized tampering of the hardware would render the warranty invalid.
Always follow the directions, of the software vendor or the manufacturer, as given in their technical or user manuals or other instructions.
Always use your common sense or better judgment at any given circumstance. If my recommendation conflicts with that of the software vendor or manufacturer, then please follow the recommendation of the vendor or the manufacturer. When in doubt, please get clarification from the vendor or manufacturer. Please be kind enough to inform me of such inconsistency in my website so that it can be corrected.
5.2 Electrical Warnings
As advised above in Clause 5.1 - General Warnings, do not open the PC box yourself. Please refer it back to a qualified PC technician.
If you still want to open up the PC box, then:
5.2.1 Always unplug the PC before opening it up. Just switching off the PC is not enough. Unplug all other components also like printer, scanner, modem, etc.
5.2.2 Never open your monitor even after unplugging it. As the monitor components store very high voltage current for long durations even after unplugging it, you could be electrocuted even when the monitor is unplugged.
5.2.3 When you open up any computer component, please ensure that you do not, inadvertently, leave any small objects like screws, cotton wool, cloth, etc inside the hardware component. When you plug the component to an electrical source, this may result in a short circuit, fire hazard, etc.
5.2.4 Please be careful when handling liquids like water, coffee, etc near your computer. It can easily spill on your PC box spreading to the hard disk damaging your valuable data or it may result in a short circuit.
5.3 Data Precautions
5.3.1 Before installing any application software, take a complete backup of your hard disk. In case of need, you should be able to restore, from the backup set, the bootable partition apart from the data partition.
5.3.2 If you are upgrading the operating system or installing patches or bug fixes to the existing operating system, then also take a complete backup of your hard disk. In case of need, you should be able to restore, from the backup set, the bootable partition apart from the data partition.
5.3.3 Note down your system’s BIOS settings before making any changes in the BIOS.
5.3.4 If you plan to open your PC box, always take a complete backup of your hard disk before opening up. Please note that any hardware is replaceable but data is not. So, do not take any risks with data.
5.3.5 Please be careful when handling liquids like water, coffee, etc near your computer. It can easily spill on your PC box spreading to the hard disk damaging your valuable data or it may result in a short circuit.
5.3.6 Always power off your computer when not in use. Powering off should be through the normal shut down procedure laid down for various operating systems as per the accompanying software manual. If the PC is powered off abnormally, then there is a chance for data loss.
5.4 Warnings on Static Discharge
Static is a curse for computer components. A static discharge can ruin computer components within a second. The following are some of the precautions against static discharge:
5.4.1 Before opening the computer box, always either work at a static-safe station or use a commercial grounding strap.
5.4.2 Additionally, you can ground yourself by touching the exterior metal CPU box of your computer’s SMPS (power supply) which is located near the fan before you unplug the computer.
5.4.3 When using a grounding strap, always buy a commercial grounding strap. Please do not attempt to make your own strap as you risk getting electrocuted.
5.4.4 As a general rule, always handle all the components by the edges and avoid touching any pins, chips and other connectors. This will reduce the chances of a static discharge.
5.4.5 During storage or transportation, always use anti-static packaging material for all your computer components.
5.5 Mechanical Warnings
There are basic precautions that you can take while you are handling computer components.
5.5.1 Work from a big, flat surface with raised edges. This will help prevent components from falling off, getting lost, etc.
5.5.2 Make use of tools specially designed for computer maintenance. Use only branded tools.
5.5.3 Whenever you are forced to power on your machine when the cover is off the case for the purpose of testing some components, please make sure that some small tools or other objects like cotton wool or screws or cloth do not fall into the box when you are closing the cover. This can result in short circuit, fire hazard, etc.
5.5.4 Be careful of sharp edges inside the PC box, especially when the PC box is of a cheaper variety. You can easily hurt yourself while working inside the PC box.
5.6 Safety with Children
Children are very inquisitive by nature. It is better to take some precautions to avoid the kids damaging a computer or their getting hurt due to a PC. Some of the precautions are mentioned below when children are around.
5.6.1 Do not leave a computer unattended when it is powered on. If you wish to be away from the computer for some time, it is always advisable to switch off the PC.
5.6.2 Again, be extra careful about children’s activity when the computer is open and you are doing some maintenance on it. Ideally, bar entry to children inside the room where the computer is open.
5.6.3 Do not leave tools, CDs, Floppies or flash drive lying around unattended within the reach of children. They can easily insert a floppy into a CD-Drive or drop some small tools into the PC box. This can result in damage to components, short circuiting or fire hazard which can also compromise the safety of children.
5.6.4 Always use BIOS Boot password as well as Network Login Password. This will prevent children from operating the PC without your permission. This will help prevent critical data loss.
5.6.5 With children around, make it a habit to take regular backup of your hard disk. See data related instructions at Clause 5.3 - Data Precautions.
5.6.6 This is the age of the Internet and Chatting. We hear several cases of child abuse through the medium of internet and chatting. Please protect your children from child abuse. Now, you can monitor various PC and internet activities through parental control and other firewall software. Install these software on all those PCs which are accessed by children.
